15 Evergreen Writing Tips

By Lisel

Writing as you talk may not always be the greatest idea – even when blogging.

Putting something down in writing means that it’s as good as “black on white” - even if it finds itself on a computer screen - and it can be annoying to read if poorly written.

  1. Think before you write.
  2. Be sure your thoughts are worth sharing!
  3. Use spelling check or keep a dictionary handy – yes, spell correctly!Evergreen Writing Tips
  4. Keep your sentences short rather than clumsily long.
  5. Do not repeat yourself.
  6. Keep the attention of your readers: be sure that what you are saying, is interesting.
  7. Do not use too much slang, even when writing informally.
  8. Don’t get personal – well, not too personal. Don’t cross the “line” of ethics.
  9. Be sure that what you write, is something you would enjoy reading if someone else wrote it…
  10. Avoid being offensive and do not use coarse words.
  11. Call a spade a spade – don’t call it a “bloody shovel”.
  12. Get your facts straight & correct.
  13. Be consistent & correct in name spelling!
  14. Beware of plagiarism!
  15. Quote accurately and fully (acknowledge your sources).
